A so-called tummy tuck may be appropriate after weight loss, pregnancy and increasing age with decreased elasticity of the skin. A tummy tuck is not a shortcut for weight loss. The procedure basically implies that the excess of skin is stretched down and removed. If there is excess fat on the stomach also and / or hip combs it can often be fixed simultaneously. Sometimes there might be a protruding belly too which may be because the abdominal muscles are also stretched. In this case they are tightened up so the stomach gets flatter. The surgery, which is done under general anesthesia (you are asleep), takes a few hours to perform. The abdominal incision is placed as an extended cesarean and up against the hip combs. Sometimes the incision is done around the trunk. To stretch the skin properly it is usually necessary to “cut out” the navel and create a new one but at the same location. Some of the sections are sewn together with thread that disappears by itself, others are removed after a few weeks. The normal stay at the clinic is of one night after surgery when you will be pampered by our experienced night nurse. Often one or two tubes that drains fluid from the wound remain after surgery . We recommend the use of a girdle or pressure garment for a few weeks after the operation, to reduce swelling and for your convenience.
Limited fat deposits in various parts of the body can sometimes be sucked away by a so-called surgical vaccum. Liposuction is not a shortcut for loosing weight but more a trimming of “bulging” areas. Common places for fat accumulation are the insides of the knees, belly, double chins, hip combs (“love handles”) and the out and insides of the thighs. The surgery is sometimes performed under local anesthesia (awake), sometimes under general anesthesia (in the anesthetized state). A long thin steel cannula is introduced under the skin through small, half inches long incisions. The cannula is connected to a hose and a machine ( like a vacuum cleaner), that then sucks the fat out. The operation takes about an hour to perform. Small stitches are applied on the incisions and removed after 1-2 weeks. Usually patients home the same day. The operated area will be swollen for a period afterwards and it will feel as it does after an intense exercise session. You get to shower as usual the day after the surgery. The end results will not be visible for long – at least six months.
